8 champs with ability to bump


8 champ slots, plus a second place conference team, or independent can bump the lower ranked champs if they are ranked significantly higher, like five slots higher (notice that the #2 ranked team will always get in, as they should, regardless of who #1 is). But no more than two teams per conference. Most years I would expect one to three bumps, with plenty of access for really good G5 teams and independents.

I believe the current rankings would have two bumps with Wake getting the last champions slot, and the Big 10 and SEC bumping (sorry, UTSA and San Diego State. You have to be a bit better than #23 and #21). ND would not make it in because they are not 5 slots better than Wake. That is the price you pay for cherry picking your schedule.

Even better would be to replace the conference championships with round of 16 games, making same conference teams play each other. The one bid confs have to play each other instead. And use the big New Years Day bowls for the second round. That preserves and strengthens the bowl system.
