I think perhaps people conflate "toughness" with "physical"....
Toughness is a bit subjective, there's a mental aspect to it.
Being a physical team is not subjective. You hit hard, you tackle hard, you block hard. Athletic and powerful. We were once known as one of the most physical teams in the country. Win or lose, VT took alot out of opponents physically.
There has been a gradual sea change over the years. Just look at the bodies we were putting on the field from the 90's up through the latter part of Beamer's tenure. There is simply no comparison between what Gentry was producing in his heyday vs what we see now. Men vs. boys honestly.
"Do you even lift bro?" is a fair reaction to what you see on the field these days. We're small and weak.
