VT certainly isnt at that point in their program where 11 or 12 players will be more than enough to comfortably play a full season. VT currently has 11 scholarship players, and is thought to be one of its deepest teams in a long time. Yet theyre one injury on the wing or at PG from being in serious trouble.

If a kid is injured and out anyway, absolutely redshirt him. But if VT is recruiting players they dont think will help until year 5, then they dont need to be recruiting those players.

I really hope John Ojiako comes back for a 5th year. Can you imagine, as bad as Ojiako was in year 1, how much worse it would have been if he redshirted?

Next year, VT is looking at Ojiako, N'Guessan, Kidd and Haynes as the returning bigs. Can those 4 carry a whole year? If Ojiako gets hurt, does Kidd play 40 minutes at the 5? He cant catch a ball currently (and yet has the highest upside)

For as much as people talk about redshirting in basketball each year, it hasnt happened a single time at VT in the last 20 years (at least) that wasnt due to injury or transfer.
