Ok insurance gurus I've got a situation on which I would appreciate advice.

First of all, let me preface this by saying that if any of you still had any lingering doubts about whether I am a complete moron/idiot/looser, keep reading and I can assure you that you will doubt no more.

This morning my daughter and I were running a bit behind leaving the house. She was dawdling a little bit, and I didn't sleep very well and was groggy this morning. As we rushed out the door, I had multiple things on my mind and was not paying close attention to what I was doing. Most days I am parked at the end of the driveway behind my wife's vehicle because she usually gets home from work before I do. However, yesterday I got home first, so my wife's vehicle was parked behind my truck. As I walked out the door, I saw my wife's vehicle parked directly behind my truck, but my daughter had already run ahead to the truck and was waiting to get in, so I went to help her instead of going back inside to get the keys to move my wife's vehicle. Somehow, in the process of getting my daughter situated in the truck and then fielding a phone call from work, I got totally distracted and simply jumped into my truck and threw it in reverse...and backed directly into the front left corner of my wife's vehicle. If you've ever experienced a bad situation where you instantly realized you just made a really stupid mistake and your mind instantly races into all of the things you should have done differently, then you know exactly how I felt as soon as I heard the impact. I am SUPER careful about never doing anything like this, so I am having a really hard time swallowing the fact that I did something so careless. This is easily THE STUPIDEST thing I've ever done in my entire life.

So aside from being angry at myself, here's my dilemma:

I immediately used the GEICO app to try to file a claim, but it was kind of convoluted because I own both vehicles that were involved. My truck has some minor damage, but not nearly as bad as my wife's vehicle, and that's the one I wanted to file a claim for. Anyway, I submitted the claim and got an estimate appointment scheduled, but the app was asking for some additional information that I really didn't seem to be able to properly explain without speaking to a human. So I decided to call and speak to a claims specialist. The woman who helped me was very nice, but after almost an hour of answering questions and waiting for her to adjust things in her system, she came back to me and said that unfortunately in Virginia, insurance claims for a vehicle that you own that gets damaged while driving another vehicle that you own are not covered. My heart sank, as I'm guessing the damage is at least $5k (probably more these days) due to the fact that my truck bumper went into the intersection of the bumper/grille/hood/headlight/fender, so all need to be replaced. Had I not called, I probably wouldn't have had any issue.

I've since spoken to a body shop who said they think this is shady and that GEICO should be covering the cost of the repair, and they stated that they hate GEICO and do not work with them. So, I'll probably be looking for new insurance soon regardless, but can anyone here tell me if you've experienced a similar situation? Is there anyone here with an insurance background that can speak intelligently to how this works in Virginia? (@Stork maybe?)

TIA...and feel free to laugh away at me. I deserve it. And no, this is not a backstory. I really wish it was.
