Whit wanted Fu to resign, but coach for 2 more games.
Fu had the leverage, as Whit did not want to wait until 12/16 to get into serious talks with the new coach. It is quite possible that the coach that Whit wanted would be gone by then.
Fu didn't quit, he just used his leverage to get an extra $1.25 million. With the announcement imminent, there was no advantage for Fu to coach the last 2 games, as it would have made it difficult to work on getting his next job before 12/16.
In reality, both Fu and Whit got what they wanted. That is the outcome of two adults negotiating in good faith.
