Alright handymen, anyone here built an electric fireplace?

We've been looking to get something similar to the attached image but can't find anything that's the right size for the space we want to put it. I had the thought that I could just buy the electric fireplace insert and build the fireplace structure to the size I want. My one question here, how does the heating element not catch the plywood I'd use on fire? I've looked up a few plans on this and none of them address that part, and they're all using regular plywood. Am I an idiot (spoiler: Yes. But am I an idiot for asking this question?)
