insulation on the exterior. I have a faux electric fireplace that we pull out in winter to put in the living room to make it feel and look cozy. works great cause I can put it back in storage during the summer. Consider one of those if space is an issue. Otherwise, just buy an off-the shelf unit and build the mantle around it like your pic.
