I used to go to NYC all the time but haven't since pandemic and unrest


For New Years it won't be affordable anywhere downtown but I think Yankees stadium is off the line that goes to Yonkers so maybe not too bad.
Maybe stay in CT and take metro north Rail down. Or maybe LI and take LIRR. NJT can take you anywhere as well.
The idea is to take trains to the game ans downtown. However with lots of people the train tickets may add up.
