However, I have a greater issue with a university administrator over-stepping her use of power in a way that MIGHT be a violation of a student's 1A rights (I'm not a free speech expert) than I do some young, immature, and even boorish college students getting rowdy at a soccer match.

I'm not disagreeing with you that both behaved badly. But the university administrator is, supposedly, a professional and a fully-formed grown-up. From my perspective, she should be more embarrassed than the silly college students.

I taught my final class of the semester last night and I had several students approach after class and thank me for managing the classroom experience the way I did. Specifically, I provided an opportunity for me and the students to create a set of ground rules to govern the class. We established norms for class decorum. We focused on both civility and candor. We acknowledged at the outset that there would be ideas and opinions expressed that not everyone would agree with or like. Some ideas would even (gasp) offend them.

Over the course of the semester, some discussions became heated and impassioned. What I didn't do was kick people out of class for having the "wrong" ideas or expressing them poorly. We managed through it. We gave each other the benefit of the doubt (that was one of our norms). We extended grace to each other and promised to listen to each other with a desire of understanding (another of our norms).

That's what bothers me the most about this situation -- I'm so tired of people immediately using power to squash something or someone with whom they disagree. It strikes me as such a weak ass response.
