I have a vehicle at a shop right now for the very same fuel tank issue...

...although I don't think my cause is the same. Mine happened right after a shop replaced the fuel pump, which coincidentally "died" while the vehicle was at the shop for some brake work. A week after that repair, I filled it up, and the exact same thing happened to me - I heard fuel dumping on the ground under the vehicle before the gas pump's auto-shutoff kicked in. Soon after that the check engine light came on due to an EVAP system leak (I should say so!). My guess is that either the pump isn't seated correctly or a gasket wasn't used, or the fuel tank got cracked or punctured while the shop was replacing the pump. The vehicle is back at the shop now, and I'm waiting for them to try to weasel their way out of responsibility.
