It also depends on what you plan to do in retirement.

If you like to bike, camp, and hike, your expenses are probably less than those who plan to fly to Europe for vacations.

Generally speaking, your basic expenses should be lower after retirement having paid off your mortgage, cars, etc. It's how you plan to spend your free time that could be more expensive.

Pick up a hobby. Learn to play a musical instrument. Learn a foreign language. Take a cooking or gardening class. No matter what, the one thing you really need to do is get outside and move! Go for daily walks, bike rides, etc. Don't just sit on your butt and watch TV.
