College football parity -- has it ever really existed?
Going back to 1961 and looking at the AP poll prior to Alliance/BCS/playoffs there have only been 20 schools who have won the college football championship in its most widely recognizable form. Yet only 6 of those are one-time winners of the title (so the overall odds of someone new winning are along the lines of once every 10 years now). Alabama has won it 12 times.
Strong evidence to suggest that there has been a very exclusive club at the top of this sport over the last 60 years -- and Alabama (having won 20% of the championships) has almost always been a consistent member of it.
Parity is a nice idea for most of us. And there are certainly ways to promote/require it. But for now I would suggest that it is a mythical concept at best.
