In years when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday, I believe the bowl games

were forced to play on a different day because they didn't want to compete against the NFL. Even if New Year's Day falls on a Saturday, I believe the NFL could choose to play a regular season games/playoff games on that day because it is outside the college football regular season per the concessions made by the NFL under the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961.
