Something I learned from my days in Raleigh. 4 wheel drive owners were
overconfident, and in some cases, the relocated yankees in 4wd's were maybe a bit worse. They all thought, rightly, "I know how to drive in this, and I have a 4wd." BUT they didn't realize that back in upstate NY, the salt or sand, even if it's below the snow, is still providing some connection to the surface for you. Without that as the base, you've just got ice or packed down snow, and 4wd on ice just means that all 4 tires aren't getting traction.
