of the first things that popped into my mind. My mother, who still lives in Harrisonburg, told me yesterday that JMU had 2 students commit suicide in February. I don't believe either student was a student-athlete, so the schools have to remember the mental health issue is can impact everyone not just certain groups (i.e. the student-athletes). I believe VT had a member of the Corps of Cadets (I think a senior) die suddenly earlier this year.

I do agree with you that the athletic departments need to do a better job of remembering these student-athletes are people and not just a means to the next end. I may even go as far to include the fan base too which can make things a little tricky given the path college athletics seems to be heading down now in terms of the role of the NIL and other potentially benefits the players may start to see in the future.
