Honestly, I'm a bit pinched if the market takes a steep downturn

I absolutely do not have the time or energy to do the research required to try and time the market. I am strictly a buy-and-hold investor who uses broad mutual funds to basically invest in the overall economy moreso than individual companies. And over the long-term, that works.

Yes, I am pumping money every month into my investments. But at this point in my life, more of my eventual net worth is based on investments already made, not ones I will make in the future. Heck, I'm dumping right at 40% of my gross pay into savings/retirement. But even at that rate, there is no way what I save over then next ten years will come close in value to what I saved (and it's subsequent growth) in the previous 30 years.

Even though I started with a joke about stressing over stocks being on sale, a dip/correction/crash in the market is only awesome for 20 and 30 year olds. When you're 50+, it comes with a hefty pucker-factor.
