Really expected that we would be in the market for a new coach.

Maybe Witt hasn't had the time to start a coaching search, or the coach he really wants isn't ready to come to VT now? Maybe Witt sees the challenges the team faced this year as extraordinary, and thinks Mason will have more success next year?

Would bet good money that if Mason doesn't turn this around, he won't be around for another season.
