Woodpecker destroying the soffitt on our house

Anybody ever deal with the issue before- and have an idea of how to stop woody from going to town? It's new soffitt we had installed before we moved in earlier this year- and now there are a few soft ball sized holes that have shown up in the last 2 weeks. We're going to replace it, clearly but wondering if we can do anything to discourgage woody in the future? (It's not like there isn't good areas elsewhere nearby- I live on an acre with a half acre of trees which is part of 27 acres of common woods behind our house)
