Delaney just explained the CFP "current" system. They voted 4 years ago to
make Conference Champion a component, but not mandatory to make the playoff. He supported making it mandatory, the SEC thinking they could get two teams back then did not want it mandatory.
So while you can make it without a conference championship, it does matter and even if two make it this year without it that would be 10 conference champions and 2 that did not win it in 3 years. It's not mandatory yet, but it sure does help.
PS I don't get the argument for Michigan with them losing 2 out of the last 3 games played.
