rivalry is because of the behavior by 1 or both schools. I believe the last two times both schools played each other in football UVA's pep band and/or official marching band poke fun at WVU (and the state) during its halftime show. I am pretty sure the pep band did it the first time, but I am not sure which band did it at the Belk Bowl (or whatever the bowl name was at the time). It may have been done in harmless fun and WVU may pulled its own stunts (not sure since I couldn't find any examples). However, something small could be enough of a spark to create bad blood between the fanbases (even more so than normal) to where safety could become an issue if those 2 schools start to play each other on a regular basis.
