That's a big part of the problem

I know this is taking your statement way too literal, but it applies up and down the spectrum. People on both sides take outrageous absolute positions on things that don't really matter and back themselves into a corner where they can't/won't make small compromises. If you REALLY wouldn't stand and listen to somebody you disagree with for an hour or so - for a large sum of money - then your priorities are off. You could give the entire sum to a charity if money isn't your thing - at some point the good that would do outweighs you having to listen to it. Doesn't mean you agree with or support what is said.
