It seems like many of the state's best softball players come from rural...
areas. The NCAA is loaded with softball players from small high schools. They play their summer ball on travel teams. There are lots of players from Southside Virginia and Shenandoah Valley playing at the D-1 level. JMU is proof that you can win with players from small high schools. Little Kenston Forest (75-100 students) sent players to Arizona, JMU, and Longwood in 2013. IMHO, softball is one of those NCAA D-1 sports where an equal amount of the talent comes from rural areas. That can't be said for football, basketball, and suburban sports like soccer and lacrosse.
As for British Columbia, it seems like the Pac-12, WAC, MWC,.. are grabbing most of them these days. Many of the BC players played JUCO (NCJAA) ball in Florida or California. I'm surprised that Tech doesn't sign more California players.
