Sometimes I think many of those that go today


Are in it based on other's perception of them. The corporate type. They climb it to feel superior to those in their social or business circle. Enabled by the point and click outfitter.

A very small portion are driven by their own internal compass. I think many of the earlier climbers of Everest were like that (and they were wealthy enough to finance the endeavor).

The closest contemporary embodiment is Alex Honnold, who solo free-climbed El Capitan (the only one). He is pure. Lives in a van so he can climb. Of course the corporate money chased him once it figured out what he could do. Alas, I fear he is not long for the world, the personal risks he takes are just so great.
