I first saw mention of if on TSL and checked the TV in a conference room. Our VPs were in a high-level meeting in another conference room that I then interrupted to tell them to turn on the TV.

I remember all the unfounded rumors -- White House was hit, or the Capitol, or the Washington Monument. A group of us decided that if we got confirmed word the White House was hit yhat we'd all go down there to do what we could to help.

I had carpooled in with my dad and we both knew with the gridlock we weren't going anywhere. We just sat in D.C. til around 3pm and drove home on empty highways. I passed the time on TSL and chatting with friends on AIM who were incredulous that I wasn't rushing out of the city immediately.

I still remember just random odd moments. One coworker couldn't get ahold of her husband and was in tears freaking out. Her boss came in while I was trying to calm her and said "Wow your eyes are red. Bad allergies today?" Another coworker got pissed -- and held the grudge for awhile -- because people walked home to Rosslyn or Arlington instead of to her condo four blocks away. It was a personal insult, not just people wanting out of the city. And I remember calling the local blood donor center and asking if they were open for donations. They said yes so I drove out there -- only to confronted with a sign saying they were only taking donations of O blood. I get why, of course, but woulda been nice to tell me that on the phone.
