You must have missed the part about Sadam having all those tanks

Warthogs fought the Apaches in trying to get the most vehicle kills on the "Highway of Death" during Desert Storm.

Oh, and the Air Force wanted to replace the Warthogs with F-16s because the A-10s just weren't sexy enough for them. The Army said they would take them to do the CAS mission, and the AF backed away from that decision. Lets face it, the F-16 will never do the CAS mission as well as a Warthog. Other than helicopter gunships, there's no aircraft that can do that job as well.
