Veterans Day musings about D-Day memorial
When we were up for the Clemson game, we stayed in a airbnb place that was just east of Roanoke. We saw a sign about the D-Day memorial and me and one of my daughters visited it before heading back to SC on Sunday.
I didn't know what to expect but wanted to go because my father participated in D-Day. I always wondered why the memorial was in Bedford, Va. While there, i learned that it was in Bedford because that little town in central Va. lost more men in battle that day (per capita) than anywhere else in the country. (19)
I was pleasantly surprised at the memorial (expected a lot less) and also got to read references to my father's unit's participation that day.
359th Infantry; 90th Division; 3rd Army
Also glad to have been able to share the experience with my daughter and help her realize the sacrifices that were made for our freedom. the fact that her grandfather was part of it made it even more meaningful.
Although I never served in the military, I'm proud of my father (WWII) and my brother (Vietnam) who served our country and to uphold our ideals.
