"Jim" Doss grave site...
Maybe this is more appropriate for Memorial Day, Veteran's day is more for the living, but SSG Doss was added to the VT pylon yesterday and I lived just a few miles from the cemetery where he lay so went up there before closing and took a picture of the grave site.
Hope the "Hokies" isn't too tacky, I took it with me when I left. I've attached the article in Virginia Tech Magazine and also courtesy of F4E who posted it here.
Impressive guy, a LRRP Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol which I remember hearing about "back then" that is, drop off a small team behind enemy lines, two bronze stars, purple heart you can read the rest, not sure why someone like this doesn't get a Medal of Honor, but I suppose you have to do something big and the Vietnam war wasn't the best opportunity to do big things in that kinda way.
Cemetery is on US 1 which is a strange combination of something from the 50s (Did not check to see if "Hubcap Heaven" is still there) and slowly encroaching modern condominiums. I grew up with Vietnam War in the news so quite a few views from the grave site.
