I probably wouldn't blame the guy...


who built the house. An old rule set from some time after the Civil War where someone dies/leaves for work up north and the property's abandoned it's OK to ask around and if no one claims it, you just move in, even improve the property... except things have changed and now a bank's involved and they pay attention to the niceties of the law. I'll bet it wasn't the former owners/inhabitants. Some interesting history, lost of course now.

There were a couple areas like that up in NoVa (one being in now highly valuable Tyson's Corner) that took years to untangle ownership but certainly a lot of the blame due to segregation.
