I don't care for it either, but the rationale is simple


The poachers are the villagers living near these animals.

They could kill 10 animals for $20k on the black market, or a big game hunter could pay $50k to kill one (managed to sustain the population) with some of the proceeds going to protect the animals from poachers.

This helps these animals, not hurt them.
