Cell phone gurus, experts, and internet know-it-alls....a question...

So...my 12 year old son's budding athletic career has necessitated us getting him a phone to keep in contact during his travels. So to that end, we picked up a burner at Kroger that works with the "Simple Mobile powered by T-Mobile" system. We got a pretty decent little 4G android phone on sale for $13.99 with air time purchase. The phone seems to work just fine...nice really. Airtime is less than $24 bucks a month, and that includes unlimited calls/texts and 1 gig of data.

This gets me to thinking. The missus and I currently have Verizon. We're shelling out about $124/month for our two lines. We have 2 Gigs between us which we never even get close to using.

SO my question...why wouldn't we ditch Verizon (we're way past any contractual obligation), and both use this same Simple Mobile we have for the boys phone. We'd save $900 a year.

Assuming his phone has good signal in the places we normally travel, why wouldn't we switch. What am I missing?
