What free market competition?

I live in a highly developed part of San Diego, the 8th largest metropolitan area in the US. I have exactly one (1) internet provider to choose from. I am currently in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. I have faster internet service up here in the mountains of a developing country than I do in San Diego or anywhere else I travel in the US. I noticed the same thing on trips this year to Morocco, France and Hungary all of whom heavily regulate internet providers. But we have freedom to pay more for slower internet access.
