We had the same situation, and went with leather; so far, so good
We have 2 black labs, 65 lbs each, and they can get on the couch. We bought a sectional in leather to allow for enough seating with the four of us plus two dogs. And we throw blankets on each end of the sectional, and generally the dogs lay on those blankets.
I live in fear of a dog claw puncturing the leather, but after 7 months, no issues. And clean up is MUCH easier. The dogs will occasionally drool while asleep, or even pick up mud from outside that gets on the couch. A wipe with water and a soft cloth cleans it right up.
I had wondered if it would get warm, but leather is actually cool to the touch in summer. It warms up with your body, but so does fabric.
I'm talking legit leather, not the soft leather or the waxy surface leather. Make sure you get the good leather that doesn't use the waxy stuff. Dogs scratch that wax easily and you can't fix it.
