They let the inmates run the asylum.


They had too many veteran wrestlers with too much creative control while the WWE built and rode new stars to the top. Those bloated contracts and poor creative decision making were the beginning of the end with the final nail basically being the AOL/Time Warner merger and lack of support for the product from new management
