During the 80s, WWF and NWA/WCW were already national

At that time AWA was on the verge of being national company until the WWF was able to lure the top stars away. WCCW was probably never going to grow to national company given it had very few superstars that had the potential to become superstars in the WWF or NWA. At best they would have been either jobbers or B stars in the WWF or NWA. A few, (i.e. The Missing Link, Bruiser Brody before he was killed in PR, etc.) probably could have moved on to ECW, which was eventually bought by WWE, and made a bigger name for themselves.

As far as whether McMahon had any role to play with putting the other companies out of business, we agree to disagree. One could make the case that the WWF was already global in the 80s and financially stable, so there was no incentive to continue to push the envelope unless you want a monopoly on the industry. Now that WWE has a monopoly on the industry, it is more difficult for any startup company (i.e. TNA/Impact Wrestling) to gain a foothold in the market. I believe the lack of competition will have an impact on the creativity of story development with the WWE.
