Reminds me of that Andy of Mayberry episode...

where Opie meets this crazy guy in the woods tells Andy about him and Andy tells him to quit making up stories and couldn't understand why the kids was making up lies "He's always been pretty honest until now"

Probably one of the best episodes of tv ever. Parents need to check their own parental arrogance every once in a while and listen. And there probably is a pretty good component of competitiveness here too, I mean, you probably don't want your kid falling by the wayside after getting them this far in a competitive field.
