Two important things I learned when I supervised (inside)

We had a great leadership coach come in and the proven best way to increase employee moral and production was:
1) Let them know their work matters
2) Provide positive feedback

Our group paid a lot for this leadership coach to come in and train us.
What did we do a few months later? We tossed out everything the coach said and went back to our old approach of belittling employees and putting the fear of god in them - no joke.
Positive feedback is very rare these days.

Dilbert would have been so proud.
