Need some help with a cell phone question


Today is my last day at work. I am buying my cell phone from the boss. He says I have until tomorrow at noon...after that he is having the phone turned off. When he has it turned off, will all my contacts and other stuff I have on the phone be lost? Should I contact Verizon today and explain what I am doing, or go in tomorrow and say here Verizon I got this phone, it's turned off, and I need a plan? Forgive my ignorance, but I have always had the company take care of this stuff for me, and now I am retired starting at 3:30.
