you do not want to lose your phone number. Once cancelled, that number may not be available.

The contacts etc. are stored locally on the phone which is not your problem.

Just git it done. I suspect your boss will have to okay the transfer and that will be the hard part. Not sure it has to be in writing or the verizon guy will call your boss.
