This is why we decided to homeschool

After our parent/teacher conference with my daughters then 2nd grade teacher, where she called her by her wrong name 5 different times, we realize she was not being served by the school system. She was invisible to her teacher while the troublemakers were getting the attention.

I purposefully did not correct the teacher on my daughters name, but after #5, I couldn't hold my tongue anymore.

My wife also volunteered several times to do in class help (reading time, project help, similar stuff) and was not only made to feel completely unwelcome in the class the couple of times she actually got in there, but downright told her help was not welcome on more than one instance.

My wife works part time in a professional job, primarily on the weekends so we are able to make homeschooling work. Even if she didn't, I think we would be able to make ends meet.

We now have 3 kids we homeschool, all of them test a grade level ahead of where they would be in public school, one of them is actually doing coursework a full grade ahead. The older two are learning calculus in the 10th and 8th grade and can read Latin. Both will probably be taking courses at community or junior college in the next year or so. The youngest could be the brightest of the three but has too much squirrel in him. He will get with the program eventually.

On top of that, my daughter dances with a professional dance company and my sons swim year round. One of them is ranked in the state in numerous events. If we weren't homeschooling, I don't believe we would have the time to have our kids pursue these dreams. If nothing comes of their efforts with their activities (scholarship), at least they have learned the work ethic to achieve a goal.

So has homeschooling been easy? Hell no. But I can tell you my kids are better for it, and that has made it worth it to us. All because we chose to give a damn about our kids and not let them be chewed up by what passes as for an educational system today. I know it's not for everyone, but I believe many folks who have the ability simply choose babysitting and income.

My $0.02
