Lots of kids transfer. Lots.

My son got into VT from high school and went. He said kids showed up from his high school that had originally gone to other schools. Transfers from JMU, Clemson, PSU etc.

My daughter didn't apply to any colleges from high school. Wasn't ready. Went to community college for two years and transferred to VT and she is there now. At the community college she started seeing kids show up that had originally gone away to other colleges. Didn't like it, came home, went to CC and then transferred to VT, UVA or GMU. Some of them only stayed a semester at NVCC. My daughter stayed the whole two years at CC because it was her choice. She had a 4.0 and could have transferred any time she wanted.

Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but I think if a kid doesn't get into his/her first choice in state school right away, they should spend a semester at CC and transfer. Better than going out of state and spending all that money.

We helped our kids pay for college but they were responsible for about 20%. My daughter will graduate with 1/2 the student loan debt that my son has.
