Any recommendations (yay or nay) on Sleep Number mattresses?

Neighbors bought an $8k mattress, but there's no way I'm paying that. Wifey is looking at Sleep Number type mattresses but they are kind of pricey, and we've never owned anything other than traditional coil type beds.
