UNM is not attractive as an expansion candidate..
1. Football attendance less than 19k/game. Marginal local support.
2. Poor academics. Ranked lower than WVU.
3. Relatively small school. 19k undergrads. SDSU by comparison has over 30k undergrads.
4. Hard to get to (few direct flights). I have been to Albuquerque many times and options for both Air and Hotel are weak. Alburquerque also generally sux.
5. Not sure about demographics being favorable or unfavorable. UNM is 50% Hispanic.
6. New Mexico is also one of the poorest states.
7. Bernalillo County has about 650k residents versus 3.3 million in San Diego County. Clark County NV has over 2 million.
8. Based on statistics that I saw, New Mexico is ranked 50th (out of all states and DC) on % cable households. Only 185k cable households total.
9. UNM football has had 2 winning seasons out of last 10 years. Also, now dealing sex abuse issues and HC being suspended.
10. On the plus side, Albuquerque has a roller derby team.
11. Also, Marv Levy used to be a HC
