Amica. Car for 27 years or more, home for 25 or so (intermittent, as I

didn't always own a house in that period).

I'm very pleased with them. 2 short stories.

1. When I first got Amica, NY State had a rule that your current insurer had to have proof of new insurance before they'd cancel the current. When I went in to my Allstate agent to cancel, he spent a moment trying to keep me, but then said "Oh, you got in with Amica (at that point they were by referral only). They're the best company going out there now" and stopped trying to sell me. So this was an Allstate agent telling me that Amica was the best insurer.

2. Much more recently, just as a price check on Amica to make sure I wasn't getting complacent in sticking with them, I did go ahead and let an insurance company that contacted me give me a quote. I filled out some paperwork and had to speak with an agent for a bit to get a quote. During the discussion I told them I was currently with Amica, and they said "Oh, I'm not going to be able to touch them" and the new insurer gave up.

As for service? The 3 or 4 times we've made claims, it's been paid quickly and resolved entirely to our satisfaction. No complaints whatsoever.

Based on what I've seen on these boards, and a couple of friends of mine, USAA would be the other contender. Everything I've heard about them has been good, but I can say my personal experience with Amica has been great.

So Amica or USAA
