I'm 50/50 with USAA. Been w/ them for 20 yrs but it's been a steady decline

TL;DR: USAA used to be great 20 yrs ago but hasn't been great for me as of late.

They used to be amazing but then they stopped writing waterfront home insurance in Florida so I had to switch homeowners. Then they stopped writing boat insurance so I had to switch my boat policies.

About a yr ago my daughter bought a used 2015 Honda Civic with 28k miles on it. Literally two weeks later the car was stolen and recovered on the 29th day trashed with minor dents and a ruined interior. If it were 30 days, they would have deemed it a loss and written a check for the value. Turns out that I called with all the info needed on Friday and they didn't "open it" or start the clock until Monday which means it was really 31 days and they should have written the check.

Furthermore they didn't do anything to ensure our happiness or help us in any way, shape or form other than provide a rental car for us, which Jim Bob's insurance can do. I carry $1000 deductibles on everything and was able to get most of the stuff done for under $2k so I didn't file a full claim through them, but the thief put 9k miles on it in those 31 days and they ragged the crap out of it and went over the remaining factory warranty by 1500 miles. He was living in it, smoking in it, putting cigarettes out on the interior and must've been driving in it nonstop. I know there's no quantifiable value on that but the point is my kid didn't want the car anymore. Unfortunately she's stuck with it because it shows up on the national stolen car database and thus, Carfax. It also shows that it was bought from a Honda dealer at 28k miles and was brought back to the same dealer for detailing, new muffler and oil change a month later with 37k miles. The car's worth at least 5k less than what she paid for it a month prior. Throughout the process I had to constantly hound USAA and call them because they weren't not communicative.

Progressive insurance has been amazing for boat insurance and they're much cheaper than USAA. Recently I called them and Geico to shop car insurance and both were significantly cheaper than USAA... like to the tune of $300 annually. People point to the subscriber savings check that comes in December, but I look at that the same as getting an IRS return, it just means you paid too much all year long.

Nevertheless I still have my three vehicles, my RV and my wife's ring insured through them and probably will for the foreseeable future in hopes that when I need them, they'll come through this time.
