There are 30 years of books to draw ideas from..

Even if Disney threw out the EU so they could redo the entire universe without paying anyone royalties. Many of the elements of the current Episodes are closely aligned enough to the old EU to recognize, they just got lazy and decided to do a new Rebellion/Empire story renamed the Resistance/First order...which they slipped up on a couple of times in TLJ and said Empire/Rebellion instead.
