Sold the BMW Saturday!

A couple of guys drove up from Winston-Salem to take a look. Couple of young, clean cut guys who own their own car shop down there. One's a mechanic, the other is a bodywork guy.

The mechanic has owned and driven a couple of E34s (that's the 89-95 5-series platform) and really likes them, for the same reason I like the car: it was designed before the Japanese luxury brands came along and started putting downward price pressure on the German luxury brands, leading to compromises. (That's my take; I've actually never driven a modern BMW.)

They really liked the vehicle, purchased it, and drove it home. That's the first time I've sold a car since 2003; every other car I've bought, I have either totaled, or I still own it.

I'm really glad to see it go to a couple of guys who will really fix it up right, and I'm going to keep in touch with them to see what they do with it.

I sold it for $1,500, which means that I took about a $2,000 bath on it over the course of 1.5 years. That's fine; I enjoyed working on it, and it served its purpose of letting me know that I do want to own old cars and work on them in the future. I don't have the room or the time right now, but once I clear my whipper-snappers out of the house and find somewhere to build a garage and get a nice setup -- in other words, retirement -- I'm going to buy some old vehicles and work on them.

I doubt I'll buy another BMW. Parts are too expensive. I'm thinking of an old Miata or an old Crown Vic cop car, or maybe even a regular Crown Vic that I can put cop car parts on.
