If you do decide to do another older BMW down the road, might I suggest...

...a E24. This is the "M" version which will be "pricy" if you have to do any engine work, but the regular 635CSi version with it's M30 SOHC engine is pretty bullet proof. They build those cars with forged cranks, and it really doesn't have any problems doing 300K+ miles if it's taken care of (i.e. regular oil changes, etc.). I've seen 500K+ mile examples. Buy one with a manual transmission. The Getrag 265 transmission is also bulletproof if serviced, and you can buy used gearboxes fairly inexpensively. The same goes for differentials. No matter what version you buy, the engines, transmissions, gearboxes, window switches, suspension pieces, hubs, etc. are all fully exchangeable between the 5 & 6 series BMWs. Because of that, the price of parts isn't very expensive. Recommend buying one with the E28 suspension (1982.5 and later?). The early E24s were built with the E12 suspension. If I was searching for another, would go with the last few years (86-88).

The only thing tough to find is interior & trim pieces, so Ebay is your friend. Recommend buying the best example you can find so you won't have to search for replacement pieces. One weak point is that dashes crack over prolonged sun exposure. You can ever cover it with a "dash pad," a cap, or pull it to have it refurbished (which you can probably do if you watch enough YouTube videos).
