There were always dumb people, and smart people who said occasionally dumb things.

The internet gives them a megaphone, and records it all for posterity. You see the dummy who asks "Does anyone know how long the power is going to be out?", but you don't notice the hundreds or thousands of people who were smart enough to not bother asking that question. See also: Politics, every time someone screams about "OMG I can't believe the ____s are saying this crazy thing!"
