That always seemed incredibly inefficient to me, gather

a whole bunch of varied items which tend to be high-markup, not very healthy canned goods from many locations sort them, store them then truck 'em out to wherever instead of just using money that sends the truck from the source to the location directly without involving uncounted hours of consumers, store employees etc.
