You're probably right...

it's probably more about coaching than it is about travel. Plus, the Big XII is a very good football conference most years. Before the past few years before the ACC had the a good 2016 season and the Big Ten with a good 2017 season, the Big XII always struck me as the 2nd best football conference behind the SEC, even without making it to the playoffs often.
